Cinnamons are my favourite birds but because i only keep a small stud i do not house any but they were involved in the foundation of the family that i am building. I now concentrate on Self and Heavily Variagated Green birds. I have played around with the idea of housing Cinnamons only but I don’t want to give up on the years that I have put into my own bloodline to start all over again with unknown birds.
Because Cinnamon can be hidden, some fanciers see it as being evil, but it can be very useful in any stud if used wisely. Many years ago I bought a Self Green Buff Cock but it was his third breeding season before he showed signs of being a carrier of Cinnamon. This is where you can be caught out when introducing a cock bird into your bloodlines. The same thing happened with my present bloodline. The buff cock that I bought from Dave Button did not produce Cinnamon in his first season for me but did with two seperate hens in his second. I phoned Dave and he also thought he was a normal green bird.
Because the Cinnamon gene is sex linked only the cock can pass it on in its visual form whereas the hen passes it on through her sons in a hidden form. If you are unsure about how to work with Cinnamons, below is a guide.
(Cinnamon Cock x Green Hen)
Will produce Green carrier cocks and Cinnamon hens. (All Cinnamon marked birds from this mating will be hens and all normal marked will be carrier cocks).
(Green Cock x Cinnamon Hen)
Will produce Green carrier cocks and Green hens. (No visual Cinnamon will show with this mating).
(Green carrier Cock x Green Hen)
Will produce Green carrier cocks, Green cocks, Cinnamon hens and Green hens. (It will not be possible to tell if any cocks from this mating are normal or carriers until used as breeders and this might not show for years.
(Green carrier Cock x Cinnamon Hen)
Will produce Green carrier cocks, Cinnamon cocks, Cinnamon hens and Green hens.

The main points to remember are that hens are what you see. Normal or Cinnamon. Cocks can look Normal but be Cinnamon. For this reason if you introduce a hen into your bloodline you know exactly what is being introduced. If you are introducing a cock into your bloodline i suggest you ask for a five generation pedigree if you don’t want the introduction of Cinnamon.
